Krasnoyarsk
(phone area code
is 3912.
From outside Russia
dial +73912)
Krasnoyarsk is 65 hours from Moscow and 20 hours from Irkutsk.
Krasnoyarsk is a major industrial centre, producing one quarter
of Russia’s aluminium, almost a quarter of its refrigerators and
millions of truck and car tyres a year. The city centre is quite
attractive and with hills on the outskirts. Krasnoyarsk is
certainly more pleasantly located than some other large Siberian
cities.
What to see
The
terraced hill around the old part of town is an interesting
place for a walk. Restoration should now be complete at the
Annunciation Cathedral, which is worth visiting; it’s on ul
Lenina. The old Catholic Church, which contains an organ,
is near the central park.
The
tiny Chapel of St Parasceva Pyatnitsa stands above the
city and there are good views from here. It takes about 40
minutes to reach the chapel from Hotel Krasnoyarsk.
Excursions around Krasnoyarsk
Divnogorsk. About 30 km from Novosibirsk there is the 100m
high hydoroelectric dam. It has large moving basin to transport
ships over the dam. In order to get to the dam, hydrofoils
travel between Krasnoyarsk’s River Station and Divnogorsk from 1
May to 31 August and depart every 2 hours.
